To date, CNC pipe bending machines utilize the following three types of CNC systems:

Following the rapid economic growth of the 1990s, the demand for infrastructure—such as factory facilities, equipment, and transportation networks—surged. The production capacity for various metal pipes fell far short of this demand, and the required shapes for these pipes became increasingly complex, driving the design and development of pipe-bending machine systems. Traditional 2D pipe-bending machines could no longer meet complex industrial needs; against this backdrop, CNC pipe-bending machines were developed and matured. The application of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) in control systems provided the technical foundation for meeting complex pipe-bending requirements. The rise of domestic industries such as air conditioning and automotive manufacturing has since shifted the demand for pipe-bending machines from quantity to quality, spurring a technological leap. The introduction of CNC technology into the industry represented a technological revolution, delivering significant improvements in both bending speed and precision. To date, three types of CNC systems have emerged for pipe-bending machines:

(1) Microcontroller-based CNC systems: CNC pipe-bending machines developed using microcontrollers are generally low-cost, easy to operate, offer good real-time performance, and demonstrate strong adaptability to on-site conditions. They feature convenient machine operation and user-friendly human-machine interfaces, making them ideal for developing simple, economical CNC machine tools.

(2) PLC-based CNC systems: These are currently widely used in the control systems of semi-automatic pipe-bending machines. To ensure user-friendly interaction and accommodate complex bending processes, a PLC is employed as the lower-level controller to interface directly with the hardware, while a touchscreen serves as the display interface; this configuration creates a PLC-based CNC system. However, PLCs have the disadvantages of being bulky and relatively expensive.

(3) Industrial PC-based CNC systems: These have emerged alongside the increasing power and sophistication of PC capabilities. The industrial sector has adopted PCs for automation applications. To withstand harsh operating environments—including thermal shock (high and low temperatures), humidity, vibration, electromagnetic interference, and dust—manufacturers employ measures such as enhanced sealing, filters, card-clamping bars, and additional cooling fans, resulting in specialized industrial PCs. In CNC systems for pipe-bending machines, standard PCs or industrial PC motherboards serve as the CNC platform. By installing various function-specific modules—such as motion control cards, D/A boards, and I/O boards—into the motherboard's PCI/ISA slots, a highly flexible CNC system is created. Leveraging Windows operating system resources and high-level programming languages further enhances the capabilities of the CNC software system.
