What exactly is non-destructive testing for pipe bending machines?
Source: Zhangjiagang Huameng Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. Release date: May 13, 2014 Visitor: 327

The working principle of the pipe bending machine involves applying a bending moment through strategically positioned fulcrums and force application points to induce plastic deformation in the steel pipe, thereby achieving cold bending. The lower die is located at the front of the machine and suspended from the frame by a hydraulic cylinder in a floating state. A lifting device guides the steel pipe from the rear of the machine—passing through the clamp and upper die—into the lower die. An internal mandrel is inserted into the pipe and positioned centrally beneath the upper die; the mandrel's expansion blocks then grip the inner wall of the pipe, preventing abnormal deformation during the bending process.

In offshore engineering, standard pipe fittings play a crucial role, yet non-standard fittings are sometimes required for specific applications. For instance, horizontal sections and risers of subsea pipelines, as well as directional changes in certain process lines on offshore platforms, often require large-radius bends. These are necessary to accommodate the passage of pipeline inspection gauges (PIGs) and to minimize energy loss and erosion caused by fluid flow.

Unlike mechanical property testing, non-destructive testing (NDT) for fully automatic pipe bending machines involves inspecting the workpiece without causing damage, utilizing various methods. Ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle testing are commonly employed for bent pipes. Temperature control is critical; the bending process requires a substantially constant temperature, making the precision of measuring instruments vital. Relying on portable infrared thermometers—common in many enterprises—fails to provide real-time monitoring. Furthermore, the difficulty in controlling human factors during manual operation poses significant, unpredictable risks to the quality of the bent pipe products.
