A brief analysis of the operating principle of the feeding mechanism in CNC pipe bending machines.

Modern CNC pipe bending machines offer significant advantages and numerous features. By integrating multiple technologies, they enable easy and high-speed steel pipe cutting; they employ ultra-hard high-speed steel blades that shave into the pipe layer by layer until it is severed. These machines utilize a unique rotary cutting principle, where the cutting tool orbits the pipe—whether cold-rolled, hot-rolled, carbon steel, alloy steel, forged steel, or cast steel. So, what is the operating principle behind the feeding mechanism? Experts from Huameng Machinery explain:

The bending head can move laterally along guide rails; this adjustment is necessary to align the bending die's groove with the machine's centerline after changing dies. This method is simpler than adjusting the machine's centerline by moving the bed's guide rails or the tailstock.

The carriage responsible for linear feeding (DBB) is pulled forward by the pipe itself during the bending process. This eliminates the need for "positive thrust," thereby removing issues regarding synchronization between the carriage and the bending speed, eliminating the DC motor negative feedback system previously required to generate that thrust, and simplifying the electrical circuitry.

Since positive thrust benefits the bending process—particularly for large-diameter pipes—automatic bending machines often incorporate a booster device.

During bending, the carriage acts as a load pulled forward by the pipe. To improve bending quality, prevent excessive wall thinning in the bend zone, and reduce springback, a booster device is added. During the operation, the pressure die not only clamps the pipe but is also pushed forward by the booster force, creating a lateral thrust that assists the bending process.

The bending arm and main bending spindle are integrated into a single unit, the bending die shaft is interchangeable, and the clamping die moves vertically. This design not only ensures a rational structure with enhanced mechanical strength but also simplifies the overall configuration, thereby streamlining the electrical circuitry. When a CNC pipe bending machine feeds the material for the final bend, the carriage risks colliding with the pressure die. To address this, the "interference zone" function can be utilized: the pressure die retracts, the carriage continues feeding, the bending arm returns, the plane of bend (POB) rotates, the clamp die engages, the collet releases, the carriage exits the interference zone, the pressure die re-engages, and the pipe is bent. This approach not only prevents a collision between the carriage and the pressure die—ensuring the successful completion of the final bend—but also minimizes material waste at the end of the tube and reduces production costs.
