In recent years, Chinese pipe-bending machine enterprises have significantly upgraded their equipment capabilities, importing a large volume of specialized, high-end digital manufacturing equipment. Customs statistics indicate that nearly 2,400 units were imported between 2010 and the first half of 2012. The enterprises importing this equipment were split roughly evenly between wholly foreign-owned enterprises, joint ventures, and domestic Chinese pipe-bending machine manufacturers. Today, the equipment standards of many leading domestic enterprises are essentially on par with those of their counterparts in developed nations.
Currently, domestically produced pipe-bending machines hold a market share of approximately 70% within China; however, the share for CNC pipe-bending machines is only around 43%, indicating a high level of reliance on imports. The market share for high-end CNC pipe-bending machines—specifically those representing the pinnacle of precision and advanced technology—is less than 10%, leaving substantial room for the development of high-speed, high-precision CNC pipe-bending machines in China.
As the Chinese economy undergoes structural adjustment, the expansion of infrastructure construction is driving demand in sectors such as railways, wind power, and electrical equipment, thereby indirectly stimulating demand for the associated pipe-bending machinery. Industries such as defense and aerospace have a critical, inelastic demand for high-precision, advanced pipe-bending machines. The current lag in China's capabilities in this area severely constrains the development of the nation's aerospace and defense sectors; consequently, the state is bound to increase investment, and future demand from these industries will provide a sustained driving force for the high-end pipe-bending machinery sector.
